Cultivators for a W F Farmall M or H??? Were they ever made?

Hey Guys,Me with more random,"off the wall" thoughts. While driving home yesterday I was wondering if IH or anyone else ever made mounted cultivators for a wide front end tractor??? Would it even work out correctly???? The only ones I have ever seen were on narrow front ends.

Is this a really stupid question????? lol

Yep,I got one.4 row narrow on a '45 M.The 'set-back' plate was removed to give more underneath clearance.

Mike72chev: Yes there were 4 row front mount Cultivators built/sold for Farmall M series tractors. (Don't think the H would have enough power)
We had one and it was mounted on a new late model Super MD. I did all the cultivating on 280 acres for 6 years with it. For sure I remember that Wide front had no power steering.. ya really should be moving to turn without power steering with that 4 row front setup. Maybe 8-10 years ago Red Power Mag had pictures of a SM with a 4 row front mount on it..

Dad cultivated for years with a 461 on a 300. Towards the end they narrowed up the planter and cultivator to work 30" rows.

Later FM cultivators could be put on wide front tractors. I have an 85 12 row that I put on my 1456. (Boy do the neighbors talk!)

Yes, Guy down the road has a 4 row on an H , it is still used every season. Be a job to mount that sucker up I always thought !!

The factory wide front could be set forward for more clearance if needed. Otherwise there was no problem with front mount cultivators.

I just wonder why I have really never saw one before????? Every one I ever saw around me was narrow front row crop tractors. For some reason I never saw one in person on an H or an M????

If the front tires will set correctly for the rows,it should work.

BUT the narrow front would give MORE crop clearance than the wide front due to the clearance under the front axle tube on the WF is closer to the ground than the rear axle. A narrow front would have NO concern because it sits in the MIDDLE of the row.

Is this thinking correct???

I used a 200 with a wide front and 2-row cultivators for years back in the 60's. In the row it was absolutely fantastic and much better than the narrow front. At the end, it was a workout to turn the unit around. I learned how to "skip row" cultivate so that turning would be easier. That is to plow two rows and skip two until the turn could be made without a hard turn and possibly without stopping. Then I would work in a loop always turning the same direction at each end.

Yes, your right in that the wide front is lower and if the corn is getting too tall there will be corn damage... but back in the '50s farmers were not too worried about cuting a few corn roots by cultivating or a little damage to the tall corn.. just go a little slower in tall corn so the wide front does not wip-lash the tall corn.. ...in my mind I can still remember watching the tall corn being swept under that wide front.. ..but I was told to "get-it done" so I just kept going..

Hi Lmack: Ya, I also sometimes skiped 4 rows when turning.. and for certain I did similar when using aircraft when turning. I'd split a field in half and just make a tight enough "U" turn at each end.. Way back decades befor GPS my way worked better because you could easy remember where you went back into the field before, so just move over and go back in.. ( I am talking larger open Western wheat country for flying )
