Can anyone tell me the difference between the Autolite 3116 and Autolite 386 plugs? Both have the same threads 18mm, depth 1/2", and both show as replacements for my 560. Does one of them have a hotter spark?

my understanding is that the 386 has an internal resistor. if you search the archives of this site you'll find stories of the 386 plugs causing trouble.

The 3116 is a non-resistor plug and the 386 is a resistor plug. The resistor plugs were developed to minimize static interference with AM radio signals and also TV signals, but the resistor might also slightly reduce the performance of the plug.

If your tractor has the magneto ignition, you definitely want to use the 3116 non-resistor plug, and I feel that if the magneto has been replaced with a battery ignition, the performance is still better with the 3116.

Incidently, if you use the 3116, optimum performance will be realized by using solid core, non-resistor plug wires.

One as has been said is a resister plug and you do not want to use them in a tractor sort of like the same holds true about the resister plug wires you do not want to use those either you want the true copper wire plug wires both resister set up can/will cause problem on tractors

First, ditto what Mike and Rusty said. The 386 is one step hotter than the 3116, equal to the Champion D21.

I don't know who told you the 386 was a replacement plug for your 560, but they must have the wrong information because Autolite's own listing does not show it as being for the 560. In IH applications, it is primarily used as a starting plug on the gas start diesel engines. The 3116 is listed as the replacement plug for your 560.
