Farmall Super C questions

I tried posting this earlier today but it seems to have gotten lost in cyperspace. Sorry for any inconvenience if it shows up again.

I got out the Super C my Dad purchased new in 1952. It had been out of the family and I got it back a few years ago and it needed some work. Seems there are still two problems:

1) It seems to miss a bit. I have replaced the spark plug, but any suggestions on what to look at and test before I start throwing money at parts (points, spark plug wires, etc.)

2) Once it is warmed up, it does not seems to idle back. Is there a loose spring somewhere? Or a more serious problem?

Thanks in advance. I know it is hard to make a diagnosis from a distance but I appreciate any help.

Missing, if random, and less than 3 a minute is probably OK. If seeming to come from a single cylinder, and often, find the cylinder by removing and grounding one plug wire at a time till the missing (not the dead cylinder) stops.
checking the distributor cam for sloppy bushing issues, No more than .001" play side to side, up and down.

check plug wire conductivity.

Check for vacuum leaks.

Check the valve adjustment

The governor linkage might be binding
The throttle plate could also be binding (not centered when warmed up)

a compression check is also warranted.

There are needle bearings that carry the throttle control arm in the governor. These can get rusty/ tight with age & condensation which seems to accumulate in the governor housing. Like Jim says, check for free movement of the governor to throttle rod.

Thanks to Brownie and Jim. The missing is minor and largely goes away was the tractor warms up. On the other hand the throttle issue gets worse. I will check the linkeage and see what I can determine...and the carb too.

Still runs pretty good for a sixty-year old tractor that has had some hard wear. As I mention earlier, my dad purchased it new in 1952. My mom sold it in 1962 to my uncle after my dad died. My uncle sold it to a neighbor when he sold out in 1981. I tried since 1991 to get it back and finally I purchased it back in 2006 when the neighbor sold out. There was antifreeze in the oil, and I just got that fixed (new o-rings). By in large the fellow who fixed it said the pistons and rings look good. Hard to tell if it has ever been overhauled over the years.

Thanks again.

Larry
