FARMALL B GENERATOR

FARMALL B GENERATOR!?!?!
THIS IS MY SWITCH

4 POSTS THAT DEAL WITH THE LIGTHTS? RIGHT. THERE IS A RESISITOR WIRE BETWEEN THE TOP TWO. ONE HAS PATH TO GROUND ON DIM AND THE OTHER ON BRIGHT. PUT WIRE TO BRIGHT TERMINAL AND RESISTOR LET THE SMOKE OUT ITS CLOTH COAT????????

GENERATOR CHARGES WITH NO LIGHTS ON. LIGHTSS ON AND NO CHARGE. 6.5 VOLTS. NEW GEN. NEW WIRING. NEW IH SWTICH. NEW BATTERY.

REAR WORK LIGHT IS WIRED SEPERATE TO THE LOWER TERMIALS. BOTH LOWER TERMINALS HAVE THAT SAME OHMS TO GOUND IN ANY POISTION.

WHAT WIRE DOES THE LIGHTS WIRE GO TO ON THE SWITCH? I GOT THE REAR LIGHT TO THE

ORGINAL SWITCH DIDN'T HAVE THE HEADLIGHT COIL REISISTOR. LIGHTS WERE CONNECTED TO THE LOWER CONNECTIONS WHERE THE REAR LIGHT GOES??

Here is the answer to the main question. Jim

i understand all that. lights very very dim on low AND SMOKE ROLLS OUTTA the resistor coil. then lights on high work fine. what is causing that??? should i just remove resistor coil and go directly to B terminal (#3 in your pic)?????

The light switch must be grounded through the body of the switch. A 2 ohm resistor of 80 watts dissapation can be used in place of either the field resistor, or the light resistor.
The only thing common to those switches is the shaft that turns them. They are separate internally. The light switch has (basically) two OFF positions. They are L and H. In those positions the field is grounded through the resistor in L, and direct to ground in H. When the lights are on D the Headlight juice runs through the resistor for lights (top), the Rear light is full on, and the field is still on full ground. When the switch is on the B position, The lights are getting juice directly from full volts, no resistor. The rear light is still full volts, and the Field is full ground. Jim

Hard to tell from here, but I can tell you this that it is not unusual for the dimmer coil to smoke until any residue is burned off. I will always remember when we had a new 706 standing in the shop on open house day at the dealer ship and a customer turned lights on, smoke rolled out and he quickly shut them off and walked away. I didn't say anything but it was normal for a newly delivered tractor to have some paint or crap on the coil and the smoke would pour out for a few seconds. Worst case would be that it burnt the resistor out and then you will just not have dim lights. If it isn't blowing a fuse you know you don't have excess current draw above fuse rating.

The resistor is going to get very hot. Not quite glowing, but certainly not touchable. The resistor can and does get weak from being hot for years. use atwo to two and one half ohm power resistor (80 watt) in its place, and I bet all is well. Jim

thanks guys. i just wired the lights to the Bright position anyway. threw the coil in the trash. Genny is charging a 12-15 amps in all poistions by the gauge. the armature must be set that way?? 6.5 volts or 6.7 with lights on but amp meter still reads 12-15 amps. Everything is new on this darn thimg and its good enough for now i guess. thanks for all your help. really appriceate it.
