656 Hydro Problem

Hello..I am new here..got a 1969 International 656 Diesel Hydro that is slipping in High range Low is fine both in reverse and forward and reverse is fine in Hi Range. Been doing a lot of reading here and I have done the "stall test"...loads the engine about 400 hundred RPM's but will not stall it. Changed the fluid and filter still not change. Inherited this from my Dad he bought it new. If it only slips in Hi range what are the possible problems??? Heard something about slippery discs?? Cannot afford to have it fixed and it would be hard to break down this rig myself. did not know if there are any possibilites it is something other than major??? Look forward to any help you guys can give. Thanks in advance

Wanted to add...this tractor was plit for hydro problems about 15 years ago and repaired. It only has 1100 hours...was done little work since repaired last time, just a little snow plowing. Thanks again for any help.
Must be someone in here that knows all about these hydros???

Couple of quick checks you could do. Unhook the
return line from the foot n inch valve and drive
tractor and try stall test. If fluid comes out of
that return line the valve is leaking or not
adjusted properly. Pedal must not contact the
platform when fully back. They do break the spring
inside foot n inch valve quite often also, same
symptom. Other test, little more involved. Find
two steel caps to fit the two lines leading from
top of trans multi valve , cap off those fittings,
and give it a try CAUTION, you will have no
control with the foot n inch pedal when doing
this, only the speed ratio lever. If it still
won't stall out the problem is definetely inside
and not any of the control valves. You do have two
capsules in the drive control valve that can cause
problem and this test will eliminate those during
test.

Thanks for the input on this...I appreciate it. Pete I tried to send you an E-mail to ask more questions directly but the link did not work. I would like to be able to call you if that would be possible. My E-mail address is [email protected] if you would like to send me your phone number, however I understand if that is not possible. Thanks again for the help and suggestions. I guess the problem is how to locate and be sure I have the right lines you spoke about.

The return line on the foot n inch pedal is the
larger line. Not the one coming off the end with a
T and a cap on it for checking drive pressure. The
two other lines are small steel pipes coming off
the top of the valve on left side of tractor and
they lead up under the dash to the drive control
valve. I would do those tests first before
worrying about capsules in drive control valve
but they are located right above the battery under
dash. You can go to CASEIH web site and poke
around until you see search for parts and you can
bring up a complete parts catalog and that should
help locate things.

Hate it when someone posts and never lets other people know what is going on. Well changed the fluid and filter. Did not think it would help. Fluid was not milky filter was clean. Put in Hy Guard from Deere...tons of opinions about fluid..anyway Hy Tran Ultra..was not readily available and this met the MS-1209 spec. Had a loader piston leaking it stopped. My Hi Range problem SEEMS to be getting better. What I mean by that is it now seems to load down the engine more during the stall test and occasionally will stall the motor.. Who knows what this all means but I intended to do some roading with it in Hi Range and see if it gets any better. Darn thing needs to be run..will not let it sit around for long periods any more. think I will get into long tractor Sunday rides. I wonder what all of the opinions are on this...Probably still have a problem or running it might just clean things up..who knows....Hard to believe with such low hours anything could be worn out. This tractor never really worked hard plowing fields or any such thing. Anyway I am doing a lot of rambling now. Thanks for any and all opinions.

FIXED..came back here to let you guys know this issue has been fixed and that I am very grateful for all of your help. Turned out to be adjustment of the foot-n-inch valve as was suggested here. Now engine at 1800 rpm's hold the brakes and it stalls like it should in high range. Also put new brakes in it..cause they really sucked...Thanks VERY much for the help. I also had another post going on this and let others know it was fixed..HATE it when people do not come back and advise how it all turned out...THANKS again...
