hydraulic lift on brand X tractor

son-in-law has a tractor that has a hydraulic lift problem. filter screen stopped up with a light gray goop, some of it looked a bit like clabbered milk. i cleaned the screen and put the old fluid back into the tractor, worked good, stopped up again after 6 months. thoughts?

Gray goop on the screen sounds like dirt and oil mix to me.

I would be thinking about trying to flush the transmission and changing the oil.

BTW you can often salvage much of the old oil by letting it settle for a week or two (maybe with a magnet in the bucket) and then filtering the "clear" part through fine cloth. A lot of trouble but worth it if you are short of funds, considering the cost of oil. Don't try this with engine oil, though.

The wrong kind of Hydraulic fluid in Brand X could cause the brake disk or internal clutch disks to disentegrate and cause problems. Find out what kind it needs and replace it.
