Carb trouble

We have a 544 IH and it sat for 3 years or so and now will not start. I cleaned the carb and it has spark. I went to check spark with a plug out and it popped. Could not repeat. It would not pop no matter what I tried. I went back and the choke area was full of gas when i took the carb off. Any ideas?

Well to start with you have flooded it an will need to clean the plugs since they will be gas fouled. Next your float is sticking or bad or the needle is not seating as it should because of dirt/rust or other such thing

The plugs were dry. I"ll check on the jet seating. The fuel solenoid has to be replaced could that be it? I installed the carb then it sat for a week or so until I got the battery and key. I read that a defective one will not close.

I can not say about a carb with that solenoid since I have not messed with ones with them. Another thing to check is pull the air cleaner tube off and hold your hand over the carb and crank the engine over. You should fell a good bit of suction and if you do not then you may have a manifold gasket problem or low compression

That carb solenoid opens when the ignition is on and shuts when it is turned off. A solid click should be heard when it works. (you need to be near it to hear it), be careful with it in neutral.
Taking it out should find gasoline coming from the hole. It is not adjustable. If the fuel is old, drain it and put in fresh. Old fuel often will not fire well. Put it in a mix with other fuel and use it, but put fresh in the tractor. Jim

I drained the tank before we started. Just to be sure is it the solenoid that screws in over the main jet on the bottom? I pulled it once (ignition off) and gas was coming out. It broke so we have to get a new one anyways.
