39 F-20 governor linkage

I have a 39 F-20 and the governor linkage that makes the 90 degree bend hits the cover and causes the governor not to work right. I am thinking of just cutting a piece of thick cork gasket and shimming out the cover to get it to clear. Has anyone else had this issue or am I overlooking something. Thanks.

Make sure that everything is "seated" right at the carb end, including a gasket. I would suggest a second gasket at the carb end and at the cover end you show.

I did check the linkage on the carb end and it seems to be o.k. I don't have a gasket on the carb end though. I'll get some gasket paper and make a couple and see what happens. I don't think it will take much.

Am I right to assume you have a variable speed governor and that's just a flat cover that goes on your pic and not linkage? Normally the half moon part of the pivot would be ground off as it is no longer needed. But yes, a 2nd gasket would probably give you clearance.

Oh you did say 39. I think that would be variable speed from the factory. It looks like probably somebody has substituted that pivot piece from an earlier model.

Here is a picture of my governor. My cover on the 90 degree linkage isn't flat it has a cup shape to it. Also, a few years ago I bought a mag for this tractor from a reputable person and it was too short to couple up so I made a spacer. He told me it was the correct mag for my tractor so my governor must be an older one. I wonder if the whole governor setup has been changed at some time.

All those parts will mix and match so I wouldn't make a judgement without seeing it in person. All the governor shafts are the same length. Your magneto matching problem could be solved by changing the front coupler half that is keyed on the shaft. There are two lengths of that coupler. The early mags up to about 1934 used the short coupler as they had a longer impulse drive. (this same short coupler was also used with the E4 mag on the Regular)
