Farmall 240 hydraulics

I have a Farmall 240 and am having problems with the hydraulic system. The rear draw bar / three point hitch does go up and down; however it cannot lift any weight. If I lift it with no weight on it then stand on it, it will NOT go down, not unless I bring it down with the lever. I've looked every where to find out how much hydraulic fluid to add without any luck. Also is there a way to check the levels of the fluid? Do I need to bleed the system? If so how? I've added two gallons of trans-hydraulic fluid to the rear end box but this didn't help.

This happened suddenly. One day it worked the next it didn't

Any help or suggestions will me much appreciated.

The hydraulic reservoir for the 240 is not located in the rear end. I am not sure but I believe it was mounted under the gas tank much like the SC. Trace out the oil tubes from the hydraulic pump located in front of the distributor. They should lead you to the reservoir. Otherwise, check your operator's manual.
Do not overfill the transmission/rear end. If you have done so you need to remove the oil down to the check point. It should be a threaded plug on the rear right side below the belt pulley or belt pulley delete plate.
These units were not designed to use hi-tran fluid but they will work with it, just slower. They were designed for an oil very similar to 30 weight.

Sounds like it might be a stuck pressure control valve. A pressure gauge in the right place may help confirm that.

The other questions are RTFM. Hydraulic reservoir is in the bell housing. Hy-Tran was the specified oil from day one.

Thank you all for your responses. I am intrigued by the stuck control valve. Where might this be located? Is it in the unit under the seat or the unit under the gas tank or some where else completely different.

After I wrote the original post I did find the correct place to add the hy tran oil, I have since drained all the oil and now I need to replace it. My question is, the oil I need to add is called Case IH Hy-tran oil. Is there an alternative to this? or is this type of oil readily available?

The pressure control valve (I believe) is under the gas tank. I haven't actually been into one of them, so I won't be able to answer any detail questions beyond this point. I only got this far because of a basic similarity in many IH systems.

Hy-Tran is available at Case-IH dealers. You can use other brands that are listed as Hy-Tran compatible or as "universal" fluid. Don't use the cheap stuff that is simply called "hydraulic fluid".

Since you didn't mention a huge puddle of oil on the ground, I don't think your sudden hydraulic problem has anything to do with lack of oil.

If it goes up and down it has enough oil to function properly. If it doesn't make any funny noises, there is no air in the system.
