What size Disc Harrow can a Farmall H Pull?

My Dad wants to use the Farmall H to pull disc harrows. We have two 32 disc sets, which I know can be pulled with the Farmall H. We also have a 40 disc set, which we usually pull with the Farmall M. Now the M has no trouble at all, but would a Farmall H struggle somewhat?

Assuming 32 and 40 are total disk with an average or 7"-7 1/
2" spacing that would be a 8' and 10'-11' respectively. Unless
you just want to scratch the surface use the smaller one on
the H.

I assume your talking about a 8 or 10' tandem
disk...We refer to then as a "tandem" or an "offset",etc., not a "set of disks".When we talk about disk size,we measure in #
of feet.Not # of disks...Now,6 to 8 ft.There places
an H will struggle with an 8' disk.While a 10' ft
is simply too big for an H,your M will play with it.

It isnt how many discs its how wide the cut and soil type. In plowed ground the H will handle a 7ft tandem that means front section and rear section 7ft wide. Try the small one you have then you will know as soil types and groun d conditions vary.

It will probably pull a 7 or 8 ft TANDEM disk. The 8 ft with no added weight. In the 50's we used a heavily weighted 6 ft to break up clods left by the plow and to penetrate enough to do a good job. It will probably pull a 7 ft with some weight on it. Angle of the disks make a difference too. Our H pulled the weighted 6 ft at full angle in 3rd gear and did a good job. It is not as simple as "how wide". There are other things to consider.

At home we had a little 10 ft single disc and the H
played with it. Got a 15 ft heavier single disc and
that poor old H never got a breath of fresh air. We
normally did what we called double disc. Turn around
and put half the disc on the already been done
soil and other half first time over. Usually in
plowed soil. Never even saw a tandem disc an H would
handle around here.

Type of soil is more limiting than size of disc. Heavy clay soil will bog down any tractor much more than sandy land. Also how much moisture is in the ground... hard, dry land will skip a disc along, but not penetrate very deep. Another limiting factor is whether the land has been plowed.

We had 10' tandem disks (John Deere and Kewaune) that gave our 40+ horsepower tractors all they wanted. We pulled them for years, but they were actually too much.

I'm sure an 8' of the same type would be too much for an H.

I pull a 10 ft John Deere KBA transport disc with my H. It is a little to much for it but I get the job done. I would think an 8 ft would work well.

when Dad had a JD B, he pulled a JD 7'tandem.... H in original factory form should be about the same as a late B. Many Hs and Ms out there have been upgraded with Super parts and would do better.

Thanks folks, I'll start with the 8' harrows and see what happens. The Farmall M goes quite happily in 2nd gear with the 10' harrows. Could go in 3rd gear, but on ploughed ground it gets too rough. Waiting on the blacksmith to finish off making a couple of new front hitches, then the H goes to work!
