Fender Fitting Thwarted; Grrrr…

I got a set of Farmall H rear fenders, complete with the eight required spacers. A trip to Melbourne and I had 8 ½" UNC bolts, hex head and a ½" UNC plug tap to clean the years of junk out of the holes. My brother and I started work by digging the solid dirt out with a screwdriver and blowing the fragments out with compressed air. So far so good. The off side fender went on beautifully. On the near side, however, it became apparent that the two centre holes in the axle are completely stripped. There is no thread left at all. Is a stainless steel re-thread the way to go? I can't really use bigger bolts, unless I get wider spacers to take them. I think perhaps a re-thread coil about 1¼" long? Any ideas before I start drilling, tapping and bolting again? Thanks,

Any heli-coil or generic thread repair insert kit will work fine for this job. You don't need 1-1/2" of 1/2" thread to hold a fender securely. Just run the insert down flush with the surface of the axle housing when you do it.

At least you don't have the mess I have. When I bought my Super M, one of the fender bolt holes was broke off. Someone prior tried to drill it out and a looks like a punch was broken off. I have to find someone who does this kind of work in removing the punch.

Thanks for the advice folks! Recoils are in and the fender is attached! As to the punch jammed in the broken bolt there are couple of options. If you have a much harder centre punch, then you might mark it and drill out the remains with a HSS drill or tungsten carbide drill if required. A difficult and slow job… Good Luck.
