an ag parts where i ordered a rebuilt carb said my 70 psihad to be more so it would suck up gas on a cold start after setting a few days. i dont realy can beleave it, or???

If you had a distillate / kerosene head compression could be as low as 80psi or so. At 70 PSI though it will make it a bit more difficult to start though. Run-able yes, power and reliability no so much / borderline.

Make sure you are doing the compression test correctly as well, wide open throttle, make sure carb is on and no choke.

i didnt do the open throtle. do i take all the plugs out( wich i did) or one at a time? thanks.wounder why it be low. got the rebuild kit from an ih dealer wich was an aftermarket.

two things:

if you have not run the engine much yet the compression can still be low if the rings have not seated 100% yet. This can take some amount of run time to seat them depending on type of rings you have.
It does not matter if you taking all the plugs out or only one cylinder at a time. Just cranking the engine over a few seconds and record the reading.

Was the kit 3" or 3 1/8" and flat pistons or dome?

Andrew

hot or cold will not have that much effect, only a few pounds +/- when dealing with these engines.

Andrew

this is a hand crank, just letin you know. you only crank one cylinder a time, unles you want a boken hand, right?

If you have a hand crank only; no place for a starter, you many not be able to spin it over fast enough to get a valid answer.

I have an Allis B that is hand start only, and would push it down a small hill in gear to get a real reading. When cranking by hand i would only get 80 psi due to the tightness of the new pistons etc. Down hill went up 50 psi.

Andrew

You can't turn it fast enough with a hand crank to get an accurate measurement. With the switch off it can't break your arm because there is no spark to kick it back. New broken in flat top pistons should give about 125 psi, dome somewhat higher as noted, use the battery.

after rebuild, had the wrong head gasket twice befor got the rite one for the no water pump, so did have antifreeze thru the engine. probly didnt help.

If its been a year and a few hours you should be okish, you really should work the engine hard the first few hours after a rebuild/re-ring etc.

If you do not have a place for a starter then push it down a hill with the gauge in.
