53 Super C Fast Hitch and Mounted Cornplanter

Recently I purchased a 53 Super C from my aunt and uncles estate. I am the second owner; I even have the purchase doc’s (real cool). Paid $800 for it, because it has not been started in fifteen+ years. So far I have had great luck with it, it runs and moves just fine with minimal smoke. The first question I have is about the fast hitch. Because the drawbar is the fast hitch, is there a lock for proper working height? The owner’s manual advertises the use of the remote system on externally drawn implements, the cylinder even has quick pins for easy removal. However, I would think that the hitch would have to be locked into position for this to work? Second question, I found a tractor mounted IH corn planter buried in another barn on the same farm. It looks very similar to the McCormick 234CU-F251 (fast hitch mounted) planter. I have found most of the parts I need including the fertilizer unit, but still have bit of stuff missing or in need of replacement. Can anyone tell me what model this is? Does anyone know of any salvage yards were I can find parts and also is there any good manuals still in print? I would really like to have this thing intact and operable. I have never seen a mounted planter on a Super C before. Thank Jason B

If it is a fast hitch planter for the SC it is a C-251 most likely. There was a couple other models but most are 251's. They are very good planters. A picture would help a lot.

There was also an attachment(optional) to lock the drawbar in position. Then the cylinder could be removed and used on trailing equipment needing a cylinder. A piece of heavy iron cut to the right length will work. Just remove cylinder and mount the iron to the cylinder mounts. A easier way would be to install quick connectors and just unhook them from the FH cylinder and use another cylinder as hoses would need to be longer anyhow.

I have 3 different mounted planters for the SC. Email me and I will send pics of them to you. I don't have them loaded to photobucket and my computer is giving me fits so that will be easier than trying to post them here. I may even be able to help with some psrts for the fertilize units depending on what you need.

Binder books and maybe even YT has manuals for the C-251 and many other planters. Some parts for them are still available from CaseIH. Parts from many other models will also work.

Email me and we will get it lined out. I plant with these every year.

The fast hitch drawbar was operated by the cycl for height so you can use any height desired. Your planter is going to be hard to find parts for as they are over 60yrs old so finding stuff will not be easy. If you go to your dealer he can get a manual for you.

Jason, IH sold a 2 piece telescoping bar with a series of holes in it that got put in where the fast hitch cylinder was.I have a NOS one I bought at a tractor show a few years back.Anyways, you could then use your fast hitch cylinder for the remote on a disk, planter etc.We actually used our Super C planting corn for many years with a #56 IH planter which needed a hydraulic cylinder to raise and lower and it worked very well.We had to put couplers on the top of the FH cylinder and the hoses coming out the back of the Super C`s toolbox.Back then though, we didn`t have the telescoping bar. We used something that looked like a 3 pt toplink which had a ratcheting mechanism in the middle which let us raise or lower the drawbar. It really did work pretty slick.`ll have to dig thru my parts books on your mounted planter question, I`ll see what I can find. I seem to recall a heavy 1" bar with the ends bent 90 degrees that could be inserted and pinned in place to hold the drawbar at a normal height.

There is also a hole in the bar parallel to the cylinder that must have a pin to lock the drawbar in place. If you are pulling an implement that requires the drawbar to be locked, insert a clevis in the top of the collar on the vertical bar. If you need a picture, I can make one for you. I do not recall that we did lock the drawbar often, but the clevis that came with the tractor was still in the tool box after 30 years of use.

Thanks a lot for the information guys. I figured that there had to be some sort of lock for the hitch. I really like the idea of building a telescoping rod to put in place of the cylinder. I think I will make a new set of hoses to give myself a set of remotes.

George, I'm really interested in seeing the pic’s of your corn planters. Like I said, I basically have a pile of stuff lying around for this thing. I'm a Tool & Die maker so I can probably make a fair amount of stuff that I need, but buying it can be cheaper and obviously more origional. Not sure how to obtain your e-mail address, I'm new to this site.

Look to the right of my reply and click on send email. YT will direct it to me and I can reply and add pics then.

It appears that YT's email is broken. Every time I click on a send email tab it brings up the email page but to someone else. Even when I click on my on reply it does to me.

Yep, something is surely wrong. I clicked on your last reply and said I would be sending email to CNKS.

Jason

Got to the test forum and click on my email test link. When I click it there it says it will send it to me.
