Well I was having a great day on my hydro 86 when all of a sudden out of the blue it began to backfire out of the exaust, runs OK at idle to about 1200 rpm, anything above it smokes, and is up and down in its rpm like a yo yo give her a shot of fuel and bang bang bang. It sure sounds like a timing issue? Please any advise would be great, tractor has the 310 German diesel, with about 6500 hrs
Thanks

well in my life time i have only heard TWO diesels back fire , one was my Farmall 450 diesel when the injection pump went bad and the other was my 77 4370 with a 350 come a part in it with a Jake Brake , if you would nail the pedal and then let up and let the Jake come on till it almost killed the engine and nail it fast and let up you could make her backfire bad enough that it would blow the extension pipe off and send a mushroom cloud of black smoke skyward. So my guesstamation here is that you have a pump problem , as i can not see or hear it .

That's what I was figuring on, the tractor is the nicest running tractor I have ever owned, it just happened out of the blue. Tractor still starts on a dime. I all happens above 1200rpm

seen a 350 chevy break a valve spring and do the same thing don't know if it's possible on your engine just a though

Once, many years ago our 756 with a 310 in it did that. Was a partly plugged fuel line at the shut off on the bottom of the fuel tank. Sounds to be the same. hope that helps.
