farmall 706 rear end

Hi folks. I posted a few weeks ago that I was looking at a 706 and I bought it. Pretty good shape and works very well, I spread fertilizer all day yesterday and she worked great. One thing I notice is alot of growling coming from what sounds like the rear end. I checked the hydraulic fluid again and it"s good. By the look of check plugs on both sides of the rear housing, I"m thinking the rear doesn"t share the same fluid as the tranny. Could someone fill me in on what compartments the rear has? And any pictures or where to find them would be great. Thanks in advance.

The bull gears run in their seperate own oil.The same oil is used in the housings as the transmission.Hy-tran normaly, fill to oil check plug 6qt.capacity.The transmission holds 17 gal.

Transmission and rear share oil. Only one check/fill hole. Have you change or checked the hydraulic filter? There are 3-5 drain plugs on the trans/ rear end. Ussually just 3/8"-1/2" pipe plugs.

this is correct on the early tractors. later series (maybe even late "06s also) had holes drilled so that the final drives would share the oil with the transmission and hydraulics. Some tractors were modified also- I think having the square head on the final drive check plug cut off was supposed to signify the modification.
