My tractor starts up fine but after running for about 20 minutes it wants to kill and eventually does.It will sometimes also backfirer.

Could be a spark problem or a carb problem. Start it up and run it till it dies. The moment it dies check for spark as in blue/white and will jump a 1/4 inch gap or more. If you have a good spark pull the carb drain plug and make sure you have a good steady flow of gas.

You can also check your gas tank, take the cap off and look in with a flashlight or shop light, (just don't use a match or torch...HaHa),to make sure there is no rust or loose crud over the drain hole above the shut off valve/setiment bowl.

Does it run well up to the point it dies? Backfire usually has 1 of 2 causes. Timing or too lean on the fuel mixture. These old girls will sometimes backfire once or twice when they run out of gas, I know the F series does.

Make sure you have clean and consistent fuel flow. next thing to check is the coil and condensor. Start with the fuel first.
