42 H Slow Gear Oil Leak Behind Lift-All

Just replaced the gear oil in my "42 H. What a mess that was. It now leaks more than in the past. Can both oil seals be replaced without splitting the tractor? I have no experience in splitting tractors. I appreciate your advice and comments. Thank you.

Yes you need to drop the liftall to make it easier. You can get to both the drive shaft seal and the countershaft seal which runs the liftall. Get help with the liftall, it is around 100 pounds!

Thank you Red! I wasn't sure about the repair proceedure. Are the seals fairly simple to remove? Are they available any longer?

Yes and yes. the lower counter shaft end I believe you screw off so have it in gear. Then that carrier has 3 bolts holding the seal. If I recall correctly the upper seal is in a carrier assembly that has 3 bolts to remove it. You will want a new gasket for both carriers. Parts on this site are available. I personally use Carter & Gruenewald who carries genuine Case parts. 608-455-2411. Ask for parts.

Red,
Thank you for the information, I will get in touch with C&G. Wasn't sure the seals were still available.

I am pretty sure Ken Updike is still their parts man. He has slowly recreated a lot of parts for the lettered series. Good man.

Just put my 47 H back together yesterday for the same problem. Not a bad job at all , if you have a floor jack make a wood cradle to put between the lift-all and the jack cradle for lowering the lift. Everthing else is pretty straight forward. Had to use a speedi-sleeve on the input yolk as there was a groove where the seal had been running. You might want to check the ball bearing on the input shaft for play too. Mine was loose so replaced it.

The seals are generic, ie always available. Most of the seals CIH sells are made by National, some by SKF (Chicago Rawhide) If they have the IH number on them they can be crossed. Same with the bearings.
