SH restoration

Hey guys! So I have an elderly lady that wants me to fix up her grandfathers Super H so her grandsons can drive it in parades. It is is surprisingly good shape, granted it has been sitting inside for 20-25 years. Appears as though it is stuck and she does not know the condition of the engine before it was parked.

First off, do you think I am looking at a full rebuild and can I break it loose and go?

Secondly, she is wanting to know what it may cost. What can I expect to put into the engine if I have to?

Lastly, what should I charge for something like this? Previously I just charged as much labor as I had parts ($400 parts = $400 labor)

Thanks!!!

Costs around $1000 for an engine kit including machine work on the head and crankshaft, if you do the other work yourself. Quality paint about 3-500. Complete restorations of the whole tractor cost me about $4-$6000, no labor. Or you can use cheap paint, very little prep and it will be red for less than $100.

Tough question, but if you're just looking to spruce it up - not real show quality - I'd set a budget of 2 grand. Half of that could go into rebuilding the engine.

Obviously you could go way more or way less depending on a lot of factors - but I think you could stick to 2000 and have a decent end result no matter what it needs.

I think the $400 in parts is about 1/4 of what you will spend. It just adds up really quickly.

I have my dads H that was stuck when he got it 10 years ago. He freed it, replaced the rings and it runs really good. It was using a little oil when he had it, but I am working it more now and it is drying out.

Hello IAtractorKID: Sort of a loaded qustion.. which means this could blow up in your face. Who is this 'elderly' lady? Any family connection, which could make it worse? Why not try the simple and cheapest route first and tell her it is a lower cost and simple attempt to just get the tractor engine runing. Basic cost plus about the same for labor and be sure to tell her this is just a low cost attempt to check out the possible most expensive item.. the engine... Once that 'wild card'(the engine)is known you will have two things known. Does the engine run and is she the type person to keep working with on this tractor for her grandsons, (not your)enjoyment. KEEP THIS A BUSINESS RELATIONSHIP...

Your description is pretty vague. First thing to do is take several pictures and post. We can then see what you are in for.

I just posted what i know about the tractor at this point. Paint looked good and after sitting inside for 20-25 years i doubt a repaint will be required. The $400 i threw out there was just an example to keep things simple; from my own tractors i know about what it will cost minus the engine as i have not torn one apart yet. Just looking to see what an average engine rebuild costs and what you guys charge for labor for fixing up a tractor. This will be strictly business...she is a friend of my fiances mom...i am going to get it in writing that she agrees to pay so much in labor plus parts and that if she fails to pay, or the check bounces, the tractor is mine for payment.

For starters I would pull the spark plugs and see what they look like. Stick a pipe wrench on the crank pulley base and see if the engine is loose. If it is stuck, I have had real good luck shooting PB Blaster in the cylinders and giving them a couple of days before trying to turn it again.

I'm thinking with CNKS, maybe around $5000. I'd see if she is prepared for that. Then get her to pay as you go, say $1000 when you start and then more for parts and labor as you progress.
