706 electrical issue

I was running my 706 gasser the other evening, I hit
a bump, the lights went really dim, so I headed
straight for the shed. It took about 30 seconds to
get there. when I shut the key off, the starter was
turning the engine over. I double checked the
switch was off, then I quickly removed the battery
cable. I reinstalled the battery cable the next day
and the same thing happened. Any idea what went
wrong here? Thanks for any help.

Either your solenoid is bad and stuck permanently "ON", the starter/ignition switch is T.U. and sending power to the solenoid all the time or the wire between the starter switch and the solenoid is shorted/cross connected and getting power form somewhere it shouldn't.

My 656 acted similarly when the push-button starter switch stuck in the "in" position. I lubed the button and it solved my problem.

I had a 766 gas once that the wire loom from the dash going to top of valve cover had to pass thru a hole with out a grommet. It shorted out and melted some wires. Might not be the same for 706.

When you hit the bump your knee hit the push button starter switch, not likely but anything is possible. Anyway, like someone else said, check to see if wire from starter switch to solenoid is live when you hook up battery and go from there. When my Dad got the 45 H, first day in the field he made a turn on end of field and tractor dies. Would not restart, walked home, called dealer who told him to go back out and pull ign switch which you hit when you stepped on the brake. Fixed.
