Got a '51 model M with the typical shimmy when on the highway. Is there any way to take the slack out of the gear box ? Looked in the archives but did not see anything. Thanks.

The shimmy comes from worn out bushings, bearings, and the vertical shaft itself. You're going to get a whole bunch of answers on how to cure it, including the theory that running one tire under-inflated will cure it, but the only way to fix it right so it stays fixed is to replace all of the worn out parts.

Once everything is back up in top shape, you will think you are driving a brand new tractor.

I'm replacing everything in the upper bolster except for the two gears, which look ok to me. The 3 bushings are worn and the bearings are borderline. I may replace the u-joints of the steering shaft also.

Hey Rusty and CNKS,

Isnt there also some way of machining and shimming the worm gear on the steering shaft to tighten it up also?????

Thought I read that on here somewhere?????

I also read something about that. It makes sense so the worm gear is wearing on a different spot on sector. I have been meaning to try but have not gotten to it yet. I think you would want to use hardened washers/shims or make them from a work hardening steel like P20.

Rustyfarmall is absolutely correct. The only way to get rid of the vibration is to replace all the worn parts. Going through the process on my Farmall H and Farmall M at the moment. I can't find new steering gears for the M, though they are available for the H…

Thanks for the advice. I figured it would have to be completely gone through. After all I've done to this tractor, I might as well fix the front end. Where is the best place to get these parts? You can see my before and after pictures of this old M on this website, tractor photos, Dr. monty Heisner.
