belt pulley seal

I've searched the archives for the answer but didn't find anything positive. Does one need to remove the belt assembly from the tractor to remove the shaft to replace the seal on a FARMALL M. Thanks Larry

You do not need to remove the belt pulley assembly from the tractor to replace the belt pulley seal. Remove the bolts that hold the flange (which has the shaft seal in it) to the pulley housing. You can then slide out the pulley shaft assembly which has two bearings, the mounting flange and the bevel gear that drives the pulley shaft. You will need a shop press and bearing splitter to remove the gear and two bearings from the shaft. Then the flange and be slid off the shaft and the seal replaced. Be aware there are shims between the flange and the pulley housing which set the gear lash. So be sure to put the shims back like you found them. There is not a gasket there, so everything must be perfectly clean to minimize the possiblity of leaks when you reinstall. Also when you remove the shaft assembly, be prepared for the oil that will come out. There is not a drain for the pulley housing so the oil drains (only a quart of so) out when you pull the shaft assembly out. The pulley assembly receives it's oil from the transmission, but it's a good idea to add a quart of gear oil to the pulley housing through the fill port in it when you reassemble.

I tried doing it with it still on the tractor but it would only come out about 1/2 inch and then it felt like there was something in the road that was solid.

One bolt that holds the drive in place blocks a bearing. Most likley one near center of housing. The bolt will not come all the way out but you lift it up and set bottom of to the side. You can tell witch bolt by wiggling the drive and trying to turn a bolt till you find the correct one. At least that works on a W9.
