I'm reinstalling a newly machined head onto a 48 Farmall C. The only problem is that the new head gasket that I ordered says "Sealer/Retorque Required". Does anyone know the best sealer to use or whether it is even necessary when placing the new head gasket on? Only thing I've found is to retorque to 65 ft/lbs. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

i use copper coat aerosol gasket sealer. spray it on both sides of the gasket and install it. get the tractor up and running, i usually get an hour or so on the engine, then re-torque.

Is it just a PLAIN STEEL head gasket????(NO coating on it???)

Also 80 ft lb is the proper updated torque spec, not 65lb

As the others said copper coat, 80 ft lbs.

agree with others - yes you need it - copper coat (spray) both sides. 80lbs.

If you have any less than perfect spots on the top of the block, I would use Indian Head. Got away from copper coat years ago.

99 ma permatex is a good spray on if you don't like copper-cote. I have used it for over 40 years & no leaks. I have even used the same gasket at times.

Do you re-torque it when it's hot or do you let it cool?

Run it, take it apart, retorque.
