alternator conversion

Papa's Cub

New User
I have 1966 Int'l Cub with a bad charging system,. I want to convert it to an alternator. Can someone tell me the make and part # of an alternator that will work? It has to be a small one due to limited space under the hood.

Go to parts right on this site. They have an alternator that fits the Cub. Or call Ken Updike at Carter & Gruenewald. 608-455-2411. He has kits for the H and M that has everything you need. I would expect he does for the Cub also. May be just more than an alternator involved.

I used a Hitachi Alternator off of a late 70's-early 80's Nissan 620 pickup. Hitachi #14231.

Got mine from Rockauto.com for about $40.

Workin good sofar!

You have mail, I sent you an e-mail with information about an alternator kit with mounting brackets.

Why not just get your system working as the Cub sure dont need 12v and all the messing you are going to do as you dont know how to go about the conversion or you wouldnt be asking the questions. It will be easuier to just get the original system working. I just got done fixing a conversion someone did on a SC.

If it turns out that the generator needs to be replaced, then converting to 12V makes sense. Alternators are about 1/3 the cost of a generator + regulator.

You will need to replace the battery as well, but odds are the battery is already shot from being run low for so long anyway...

I thank all of you for your comments and advice. I am in the process of ordering a kit to convert over to an alternator. When I looked at the cost of a voltage regulator and rebuilding the generator, it was an easy decision. Thanks,Papa.

When I purchased my cub a few weeks ago, the previous owner stated he had just topped off the hydraulic oil as the lift was sort of jerking when raising and/or lowering the mower. Now, after about 10 hrs of use the lift will no longer work and the engine oil level is way over full. It's obvious the fluid found it's way to the crankcase. My question, is it difficult to replace the seals in cub hydraulic pump? Can anyone direct me to a site that shows a breakdown of the pump and seal part #'s?

Not difficult at all. You can get the parts numbers from the online parts search at caseih.com, or your local caseih dealer can look them up for you.

Also, when you have an unrelated question you can start a new topic.

I have to agree with Gene on this one. Why 12 volt? To be fair, I am totally stubborn about 6 volt systems. My Farmall M has its original Lucas 6 Volt system and there ain't nothing on Earth going to make me change it. In any case, when the starter motor won't turn it over I just crank start it as it nearly always fires up second or third turn. At 4½:1 compression, it's not hard to wind it over by hand.
