super m electrical problems need help

I have a 1952 farmall super M and I am having problems with the starting system. I have fried 2 starter switches already and melted a battery cable already. I have to hot wire the system to make it start. I figure the generator needs to be replaced since the battery doesn't charge, even after I polarize the generator.

Mite need to ground the field on the genny to see if that makes it charge also all componets need to have a good ground to work.

If the starter has the pull rod style of switch, check the screws you installed the switch with. They CANNOT be very long or they will penetrate the field coils and short the switch & burn cables!! BTDT.

Agree John! Problem sounds like a short in the starter.

This is what happened to mine:

The Super M is equipped with a saddle type manual starter switch perched directly atop the starter. The starter's power terminal is a simple copper button poking thru the motor frame. It is insulated from the frame by a bakelite or nylon bushing.

As the terminal button gradually wore down it caused the starter switch contact bar to arc and run hot. This melted the button's insulating bushing and caused a short. It also burned out the starter switch and caused the battery cables to overheat.

Fix was to have the starter shop replace the terminal button and insulator - about $40. This and a new saddle switch had the starter again working perfectly.
