Easy Question for the Farmall 656 Folks - Need Help.

I got my 1967 Farmall 656 gas tractor I purchased a couple months ago delivered this afternoon. First thing I need to deal with is the engine speed control lever will not remain the set position. I believe it has what is called speed control lever creep. In looking at the owners manual the PO sent me earlier I see there are a couple of pictures showing a couple of jam nuts and believe all I need to do is tighten the spring pressure somewhat so it will maintain the desired lever position. My problem being is I don't know how to access the area so I can tighten up the pressure on the friction disks. It is a nicely painted tractor and don't want to mess up anything more then is necessary to make this adjustment. If someone who is familar with this issue and the Farmall 656 tractor could give me a couple pointers I would certainly appreciate it, Hal.

Congratulations hal. You will love that 656. Number 7 & 8 are your friction discs. They are behind the dash and next to impossable to get to.

First of all, make sure the spring down toward bottom end of mechanism, (no 17 on picture I think) is there. Lot of them break and fly off unnoticed. To adjust the friction mechanism, you need to take off the fiber glass hood sections in front of throttle. Make sure the pin in the upper end of throttle is not bent or broken. You may need to cut up a wrench or two to get the locking nuts loose, don't remember for sure, but at any rate , if the disc is still in place they are not that bad to adjust compared to some other things.

Thanks for the response and I've already seen the spring you noted is in place. I'll look for the pin you mentioned tomorrow - is this visible and replaceable without removing anything else? Thanks again, Hal.

Seems I have it fixed - removed the little plastic snap cover in the center of control handle and found a lock nut. The handle seemed to have a lot of sloppy play so thought I would start there and tighten it down a little as there is a spring there at the top of the shaft as well. That pulled the handle down a little where it had some friction on the notched plate beneath the handle. Started it up and pulled the handle over to the PTO speed position and did a little more tightening to where it wasn't slipping any longer and it holds the set position just fine presently. The spring I tighten up is number 2 in the parts diagram of the engine speed controls section in my parts catalog. Thanks for your response and glad I didn't have to get into the friction disks, Hal.

Cowman, See my response to Pete 23 above as I think I have the issue taken care of. Thanks for the picture of the parts but I realized I already had a 656 Parts Catalog so dug into it for part nomenclature.
Yes, I think this is going to be a really nice working tractor capable of getting things done while being in a comfortable seat at the same time. Will need to find a canopy for ROPS and sun protection so that will be on my short wish list this year. Will probably have it hooked up to the NH small square baler next week as it's time to cut hay around here and put my disk mower on my other work horse tractor this evening. My letter series are standing by ready for teddering, raking and hauling duties - nice to see all that Farmall Red in the field together, Hal.
