Farmall Super C- antifreeze in engine oil

Helping my neighbor with a project. He has a super c with coolant in the engine oil. So far he has had the head inspected and ground and put in a new head gasket, then put new o-rings on the sleeves. We pressurized the radiator with the oil pan off, and it appears the antifreeze is showing up on the camshaft. It is not leaking around the o-rings on the bottom of the sleeves. Any ideas where to go next? Would this indicate a crack in the block somewhere? When we dropped the pan, the tractor had been sitting with no oil in it for about two weeks and there was about 3 tablespoons of antifreeze in the pan and the entire length of the crankshaft had droplets of antifreeze on it.

My first guess would be the large O-rings around the sleeves/liners, but having it appear on the cam MIGHT indicate a cracked block, but that is a big MIGHT. Those O-rings are more than likely the culprit. I've seen it many times.

Since there's no leakage around the new sleeve seals you probably have a cracked block. I would look for another engine block and have it magna-fluxed. There should be plenty of the 354898R1 blocks around. Hal

It might be a cracked block, but it also might be a head or even a head gasket problem.

I wouldn't assume that it is a bad block until I exhausted all the easier (and cheaper) to fix possibilities.

Did you use sealer on the head gasket and do the required retorque?

The very first thing I would do is run it until it is warm, then retorque the head to 80 foot/lbs. If you are lucky, that might solve it.

Was going to suggest pressurizing the radiator to look for the source but then re-read and realized you already did that.

Showing up on the cam is probably a leaking head gasket or head/deck surface itself. If you solve the issue and use the same block again, be sure to change those cam bearings first, along with the rods and mains, antifreeze eats then up.

OK, but before you condemn the block, have the head pressure tested, the leak could be there too.

Is the deck of the block flat? The water passages and oil galleries are very close together, any extra clearances there could cause a leak.

When you have exhausted all the suggestions below, including a new head gasket with a good coating/sealant and properly torqued, I would try a good stop leak compound before discarding the block. Slight leaks can be stopped and not be a problem.

I'll double check with owner, but I believe that has been done too. I know he stated he can't possible believe the problem is in the head. But, strange things can/do happen.

I agree, but owner won't hear of it. Says it should not be needed if "fixed right".

Thanks for the replies guys. I guess he'll have to start fresh and pick where he wants to start first. Doesn't seem to be a clear cut answer, and I sure didn't have one for him either.

(quoted from post at 16:58:37 05/15/12) So much for changing cam bearings cause there aint any in that engine.

Right you are Sir! I've been working on an H lately and was thinking of that engine instead of a Super C.
