Super M trouble

I have a 53 Super M. I just bought it to do some work on my 40 acres. I have been going through it and doing maintenance and finally decieded to hook it up to my Woods Cadet 72 rotary cutter this is where the problem came up. If I get into anything slightly heavy the engine starts backfiring and sptiitng and sputtering in addition when I try to go down the road in 5th gear it soes the sme thing (no implement attached) I think it might be the jets in the carb....any help would be greatly appreciated.

First thing I would do is open up the high speed mixture screw a half turn and see if that helps.

High speed mixture. On the front lower edge of the carb there is an adjustment screw. this screw adjusts the load mixture. It should be about 3 to 3 and one half turn out from all the way in (gently all the way in, not pliers tight)
from that position turn it outward until the exhaust (wide open) is a little smudgy black. Then turn it in until it just clears up the soot in the exhaust. Try running it under full load. If it still sputters, turn it out 1/4 turn at a time till it runs well. If that does nothing, and it is still running ratty, set the points (.020" on the high lobe of the dist cam) and static time it to TDC. Jim

Most likely a lean high speed mixture as Jim and the Red suggest.

Quick way to determine: When the engine begins to spit/miss, GRADUALLY pull out the choke rod. If you find a choke setting where the engine smooths out and runs well, a lean high speed adjustment is the problem.

HOWEVER ignition issues can also cause this. Look for include worn/dirty plugs, plugs gapped too wide (should be 0.025 - 0.030), breaker points gapped too narrow (should be 0.020), worn out points, failing ignition coil, etc.

Bob is your neighbor' wheat maturing early? Looks like mid June for us which will be 2 to 3 weeks early. Already heading.

Hey John - No wheat or beans at the neighbor's for 2012! Instead they're 100% into corn this year - ~5,000 acres of it.

Others who do have wheat however look to be about 2 weeks ahead right now.

Thanks guys I will give this a shot tomorrow. It was rainin pretty good this evening (good for the hay crop) bad for workin on ole red. I am new to the world of tractors I just traded in my old Harley for a pair of overalls and the Super M. So all the help is greatly appreciated.

Mine had burnt valves and behaved that way.

Yeah well before you get all worried and start tearing the engine down, please try the ignition and carburetor fixes first.

Thanks for all the great info! I am new to the world of tractors so all the wisdom is greatly appreciated. I plan on doing a little carborator troubleshooting this afternoon but, I have another question. Please keep in mind I am using this tractor as a work tractor vice a show tractor....My main concern is performance. I was looking into replacing the points and came across a conversion kit to change it over to an electronic ignition system is this a good idea ? In addition to that I an going to replace the coil at the same time should I go with an epoxy filled or oil filled and should I spend the extra 8 dollars and get the ultra high performance coil?
