Is there a consensus on powder coating tractor parts? I have a couple of Farmall H and M parts powder coated and they look very good so far. I had the Farmall H fan and fan cowling powder coated and am waiting for the lower radiator pipe to be finished. Has anyone used this method of painting for their Farmalls or machinery? Was it a success? Thanks in advance.

I'm not saying it won't work but I have read that if it chips you can get rust underneath. On the other hand epoxy primer is waterproof and very tough, If you chip the paint over it, the epoxy usually keeps it from going to bare metal. Steiner tractor parts has powder coated battery boxes, etc. Thus I don't buy boxes from them as I would have to remove the powder coat and paint it the right color. Only my opinion, others have their right to differ.

I've never been overly impressed with powder coating. Several years ago I bought a brand new set of handle bars for my sons dirtbike. The sales guy made a big point of bragging up the fact these bars were powder coated instead of painted, and how much more durable that powder coating was compared to paint.

It only took 1/2 day of riding in the woods and there was very little powder coating left.

I rebuild a small block chevy 400 bout 10 years ago and had all the brackets and pulleys powder coated blue. It looked great and was a tough as nails. You couldnt scratch it with a screw driver. These parts where not out in the sun so not sure if that would have affected them or not. The one thing the guy told me was to do everything I wanted done at one time cause each run may have a little differnt shade.

Here is the way I do it..
I would ONLY have small parts that DO NOT see ANY kind of impact.(like a dash panel, trim parts ect) i AM NOT a big fan of powder on a tractor.MOST tractors I know get used and poweder coat IS NOT "bullet proof"like some lead you to belive it is.EXAMPLE: Rear rims,If you scratch, score the powder coating on the rear rims,it is not easy to touch it up like it is paint.I plow with my tractor(and everything else0and I gurantee the rims will get "dinged' from time to time.

GOOD paint looks just as good and is MUCH more easily repairable than powder coat chips.

I have seen powder coated sprint car chassis that have been done, and at the end of the season it looks like someone blasted a shotgun at the under carriage of them!!! The stuff is not the "end all,be all" of coatings.

I do HOWEVER like the high temp ,ceramic coatings on my exaust.Jet Hot rocks!!!

IMHO! ;)

There are many varieties of powder coating with a wide range of characteristics. The process is also, like painting, highly dependent on surface preparation. I suggest that you study up on the subject and find out what process the guy trying to sell it to you uses and what kind of track record he has.
