Should a coil feel hot to the touch? My 340 runs great until it works under a load for a while then shuts down abruptly. It has an electronic ignition and it will start right up after a few minutes. Could the coil be causing this? Thanks

When it quits check for fire to your plugs asap before anything cools. If there's no fire or weak fire I would replace the coil. Hal

It could also be a fuel problem. Check the flow
of fuel from the tank after disconnecting the gas at the carb. Should have a full stream of gas. Use a clean container to catch the gas. If that looks ok remove the tube fitting where your gas line connects and look for screen that may be plugged. Hal

More than likely. Fuel will usually result in stuttering, etc, although I have seen the bad coil do the same thing.

A coil should be warm and many warm enough that you could not hold it for very long but not burning hot as in if you spit on it the spit boils off right away. Only way to be 100% sure what is going on it do the trouble shooting when it dies. Check for a good blue/white spark the will jump a 1/4 inch gap and check for a good steady flow of fuel for a couple minutes. Also try pulling the gas cap off and if you hear a suction or blow out you may have a clogged cap vent

I was thinking vent cap but when it was stalling I pulled the cap completey off and it made no difference. It will sit and run full throttle forever. It will only die out when run after a while under a heavy load or working it. I know I have a leaking head gasket but not sure if thats a factor. I will try checking spark next time it dies.

Leaking head gasket as in between cylinders or what. If you leave it leaking for to long you can end up having to replace the head or have it shaved since a leak can/will cut a groove in that area and then in turn you can not have it seal with out shaving it

I have some seepage near the front, radiator side, between the head and block. I plan on having the head redone as I get some blowby on start up and think the guides are bad. I may need to fix it sooner if you think I may cause more damage.

External seeps do no damage. Blowby is a continuous thing past the rings and out the vent tube. Heave smoke from there during work and high oil consumption are the symptoms. Yours sounds like valve guide issues and if running OK the situation does not require repair. Try a block sealer like Subaru radiator conditioner and sealer, or Barrs leak to stop the seep. Jim

I agree with Jim on that one. By the way if all you do is rebuild the head you stand a good chance that the rings will soon go if you do not mess with them

I just had the same problem with my H with a magneto. It would run for awhile and then quit. I tried everything to fix the problem. I found the problem by accident when I placed my hand on the coil cover and got shocked from the screws that hold the cover in place. Turns out the coil wire inside carbon was detached from the brass end and when the things got hot the spark jumped all over the place.
