M trans VS super M

It is possible to change the band brakes (1940 M) to FACTORY Super M disc brakes? I know there are aftermarket disc setups but would like to stay with factory style parts.

Regular Ms had the option of band or disc brakes. From my experience with the neighbor's M and Super M when he was still farming in the 1990s, the disc brakes were a nightmare on the Super M. You could pull a Fred Flinstone and stop the tractor faster with your feet. I think you will find the cost of parts on the discs much more expensive.

You will be a whole lot happier with the original style band brakes.

If it's even possible, it's major surgery on your tractor.

The disk brakes do have more stopping power, when they're working, but when they don't, they either lock up or do nothing at all... Band brakes may be noisy, but at least they're consistent and easy to fix.

Yes, you need several parts. Differential carriers, bull pinion gears, bull pinion bearing retainers, complete brake parts including clutch pedal and brake pedals and shaft. Also the different size bearings and maybe the differential housing. Parts from real late M to 450 will work except the clutch pedal is different on SMTA and 400-450 from the SM type needed.

I would never consider switching. I have a Super MTA and have often considered going the other direction. Disc brakes were a BIG mistake. Ellis

A little back story to this. I built a Super M for pulling, and dicovered I need more gears between 4 & 5. So I bought a parts M with an M&W Overdrive. Just trying to see if there was an easier way to install the OD rather then making new holes in my new paint and keep the disc brakes. My disc brakes work VERY well and required no new parts to make them work well. Just a good cleaning.
