1948 Super A McCormick Deering Decal Search Continues

4H kids are doing a great job on the Super A it's almost complete - decals will be needed very soon.

I posted last week all excited that I finally found the proper McCormick Deering/farmall hood decals at Binder Books - but then I talked with them.

They list them on their site, but apparently they're just the same "McCormick" decals that everybody else carries.

I know somebody out there makes the proper decals - I've seen a few picture of them.

Somebody on this site posted a picture of them stating they bought them from binder -

I'll include their picture here - (Note - this person has them on an A - not sure if that's proper or not - but it's exactly what I need on the super A).

Does ANYBODY know where I can get a set of these??? I can't find them anywhere.

The ones with just "McCormick" are being delivered, and we'll apply them if need be - but it's REALLY going to bug me not to put the original decals on.

Somebody had suggested them in the past - and to be honest I've talked to so many different people that I've lost track.

I will give them a (or perhaps another) try today.

The wavy Super A is in the set I've ordered, so I should be good there.

Thanks!

When you get them, check to see if "CULTI-VISION" is in white print or black. It is supposed to be white. If it's black, a good sign/decal shop can print you some white letters.

Maple-Hunter should have the McCormick-Deering hood decals.

Oh GREAT something else to worry about!

I see in the picture they're black. I can imagine it'd stand out much better on the tractor in white.

Odd that they do that - probably just so it shows up on the white backing paper so they have an easier time selling them without explaing why cultivision is invisible in the product pictures.

That WILL in fact bug me to no end, but the tractor needs to be done for the parade in town on the 28th - so I think I'll end up living with that one.

But the McCormick vs. McCormick Deering issue is too big a difference to me.

I know I'm the only one who will ever notice/care - it's not meant to be a show tractor - but to me it's almost like putting a dodge emblem on a plymouth. Just rubs me the wrong way.

I restored this Farmall A in 1975-1976 and the decals were purchased at our local IH dealer back then. It may only have McCormick on the decals. It's hard to read. Hal

Ok - Maple Hunter does have them!

... BUT ...

Only in vinyl - no mylar - and it's going to cost me $50...

So I guess I just can't win -

I'll get the original wording but not an original looking mylar decal - kind of bums me out.

I realize a lot of people think the vinyl look better - but I'm really not interested in "better" - it's more important to me to have it look "original".

Oh well - just really surprised that with all the various decal options out there that nobody makes the right one for 48's and some 49's.

Not to mention I KNOW my luck - Where the letters are separate - a few will peel off and I will forever be driving around on a tractor called ARMALL or FAR AL not wanting to spend another 50 for a new set.

But decision has been made - I will go with these vinyl ones - kids have gone too far to worry about an extra 50 bucks now...

Good morning JR,
That's a very familiar picture you have posted.
I did get the decals from binderbook, Aug. 2011. The hood decals did not come as part of the kit. I had to buy them separately and they only had them in vinyl at the time, spendy. They are proper for my 1947 A.
But now you have me concerned because I also have a 1949 C with original decals that are the same. I checked their site after your post and they are not listed anymore.
So, if you find some please post the source if you would.
thanks
Dennis

Check and see if you have a decal/sign maker close by that does vinyl lettering/stickers/decals. They can scan the black lettering and print you some white letters very quickly--depending on the shop, maybe even while you wait. Even if you don't make your parade deadline, it would be worth it to do it later.

Interesting - pretty busy for the next two weeks with other matters, but if I can squeeze it in I will try.

Thanks again.

Wow. I would've thought that decals for a regular "A" would've had McCormick-Deering on them... Not so.

I found one set for a Farmall M that said McCormick-Deering but there was no IH logo...

You're looking for McCormick-Deering AND the IH logo right?

Yeah, there seems to be a LOT of confusion over the decals on these things.

I had no idea what I was getting into.

I had many people telling me that I was 100% dead wrong - there's no such thing as a super A with McCormick Deering - despite the fact that I have the original hood with that decal on it.

I had a hard enough time to get it straight on the Super A's - so I have no idea what's proper on the A's.

There were only a handful of 47 super A's - the first full year of production was 48.

The 47's, all 48's, and some portion of the 49's had McCormick Deering - WITH the IH logo. (just like the one on the picture about that's on an A)

These tractors aren't all that rare, so as I said before - I'm just very surprised that it took so much effort to establish this - and that the proper decals aren't made. (other than the vinyl that I could only find through Maple Hunter)

I had the same problem when I went to the Binder Books site, only IH McCormick Farmall. The McCormick Deering name used until about mid 1949. The IH symbol came into use about 1944 so would be correct on later Farmall A tractors. My 1948 (March) Super A has the oil pressure gauge with the block IH symbol whereas the water temperature gauge has the old IHC symbol, obviously hadn't used up all the old stock at that point.
It is interesting that following the anti-trust action at the end of World War I IHC stopped using all the different trade names that implied competing firms and from about 1923 farm machinery was sold as McCormick-Deering in the US. Trucks were International. However, looking at 1930s p[arts books one can find name plates, or radiator top tanks for McCormick Deering, McCormick, Deering and International. Most Tractractors worer McCormick Deering.
After the new models arrived in 1938 (crawlers),1939 Farmalls, and 1940 standard type tractors International was used for crawlers, industrial tractors and trucks and McCoprmick Deering for farm tractors and farm machines, at least for things sold in the US. Outside the US practice varied, in some parts of the world, Deering, some parts McCormick. In New Zealand only McCormick Deering (and International)

Not seeing the Hydraulic system like on a normal Super A- are you sure this is a Super A? What's your serial number?

That picture is of my 1947 A
From what I have learned 1945 or 46 they added the IH insignia to the McCornick Deering decal. Then around 1949 they dropped the Deering name. Probably had to do with a transition and using up stock.

By the way Dennis - thanks for posting that picture originally - I was ready to give up, but finding that picture confirmed I wasn't crazy and somebody did make them.

Have you tried the "mix-n-match" approach, buying another set for a regular 'A', and combining the two?

On the Super A, IH went to the 'IH McCormick" only decal in July, of 1949. Prior to that, it was as you have back to the beginning of Super A production. Incidentally, the 'B' never had the 'IH-McCormick' type decals but good luck trying to buy anything other than that now. I have several original factory photographs showing both types of hood treatments, so the next time someone tells you they never made it that way, show them this factory original photo of an Super A from 1948 or 1949.

And this one of a Cub from 1947.

And to REALLY throw them for a loop, show them this as well!
