H transmission top shaft bearing and seal

Got to change the top transmission shaft bearing and seal in an H. Anything special to look out for? That pesky lift-all has to be removed first and its darned heavy. I do have a shop jack to use on it though. Joe

Been 13 years since I replaced those items but you might want to have a new cage gasket also. The bearing and seal will be in the cage assembly. Unless you have a real early H, that coupler is threaded on so you will want the transmission in gear so you can screw it off. I actually did one with liftall in place. Made for a 3 hour project because there was so little room to work wrenches up in there. The lower countershaft seal and cage flange may be leaking also. Might as well get it all while the liftall is out. Liftall weighs around 100 pounds.

Just be careful reassembling it. I ruined the pilot bearing (which probably needed to be replaced anyway) because I did not have the shaft and pilot bearing lined up. Unless you have someone helping you, you will need to crawl under and out a few times. The thing is heavy, but not like the belly pump--luckily my SM has factory live hyd. I changed all 3 bearings on the top shaft.

The best advice I can give is to take a couple good pictures of how everything looks before you start, so you can refer to them instead of memory only when you put it back together. That way, if you get into it and find something else that needs replacement and have to wait a few days on parts, you won't have to second guess yourself.

When you reinstall the top shaft assembly, there is not way of knowing for darn sure the pilot bearing is entering the gear unless you take off the belt pulley attachment and then it is an easy job to just reach in support shaft. That is the correct way to do it anyway.

Correct, mine was off but I was too dumb to remember to look and see where it was going.
