Cub Clutch question

1950 Cubs got to where it grinds when shifting. It seems to have sometimes a bit of a growl in the rear end. I have to put the clutch to the stop and then waiting for 1/2 a minute, it still will grind going into gear. Clutch plate? Throw out bearing?

Seems like, if it was the clutch plate, id notice it up by the engine, rather than right underneith me. If its the throw out bearing, How is that changed out??

Pull the pan under the clutch housing and have a look. Have someone work the clutch while you"re looking. It may be the pressure plate fingers not properly adjusted . Wear your safety glasses under there.

Sounds like you have 2 things going on.
1. Growl in the rearend - Most all Cubs do that, If nothing leaks back there live with it.

2. clutch not stoping - Could be the Throw out bearing or adjustment. Try to see into the inspection hole from below. You will may to split the tractor to repair.

You may be able to cure the problem with two simple adjustments.

1. Raise the fingers on the pressure plate slightly so the pedal can get more lift.

2. Readjust the pedal free play so the clutch completely releases, and doesn't "tick" when you have the pedal fully depressed.

You may not end up with an exact perfect free play measurement, but you might be able to eek some more life out of your clutch this way.
