F-30 Engine Question

I have taken my F-30 engine down to the front cover plate to replace a timing gear. While I am this far, I would like to replace the gasket between the block and the 1/4" thick steel plate. How much of a job is it to remove the bearing retainer to do this? I have the gasket and it seems like now is the time to replace it, or do you think I should just put it back together and hope it doesn't leak? Thanks for any advice. BT

It's gonna leak a lot more other places first. Bu t yeah, I think all you have to do is pull the retainer and the cam bearing. I'd probably leave well enough alone. Oh and yeah, the oil pipe comes through the plate to direct oil to the timing gears. Its not fastened in but just hooked through a hole. You usually have to straighten it a little to pull it through the hole.

Thanks Cowman. I went out this afternoon and removed the three bolts holding the retainer, but it won't move. Maybe needs gentle persuation. I already had the camshaft out so that is not an issue. BT

I doubt you will be able to remove that bearing retainer without first pulling the crankshaft out, which is a major job to do.

Actually, Kirk, it was easier than I had thought. I took a punch on the inside of the block, and moving around the retainer, tapped it out. It was a slow process, but it is out in one piece. BT
