Putting my valve train back on my M gas.
What torque should I tighten the rocker shaft to?
Can't find it in my manual!

Anyone know?

Years ago I looked up torque specs. on www.engineersedge.com/torque_table_sae_ftlbs.htm. SDE

I have never seen a torque spec for the rocker arm hold down bolts. I just tighten them, but you could go with std torque chart if you want to torque them. The important thing is that when you tighten them down you have not tension on any valve, back off the adjusters. Tension will cause stress on rocker arm shaft and pushrods. Not a big problem on an M but on the six bangers like the 400 series it can get you into a big hurt. Also on the M, make sure the rockers have a little bit of side play after tightening them down, may have to loosen and tap support over a little. Can cause valve hang up, push rods come out of place etc. Often over looked also.

Thanks Pete- that's all great info, I was planning on around 35-40 lbs. With that torque everything checks out like you said and all pushrods can twist by hand still.

On my H rebuild in 1999 I just tightened them down. I don't recall there was a torque number on eighter the H or M. It is not something that is going to rattle loose.
