M starter drives

I have been having some trouble with the old spring style starter drive in my Super M. (2 bolt m&w starter) I ordered and installed the new clutch style drive and am wondering if there needs to be a spring to push the gear back to the home position? Once in a great while the ring gear can catch the starter drive when I shut the engine down.

M & W gear reduction drive starter and all the rest that are not factory are just a pain period. Some factory ones also. Tried them on different truck and tractors. All it ever accomplished was ruining a perfectly good armature that you had to cut off.

Just checking to see what experiences were on these. The eng is NOT factory and I need the gear reduction to crank it. Not ready to spend the money on a marlett starter yet. I have sprung 2 springs on the old style drive. Its what I have right now and it works ok just seeing if it could be better.
