I notice when I pulled the brake drums off of my H there were cork gaskets under the bolt and washer that fastened the drum on the splined shaft. Has anyone tried silicone there instead of the cork?

Provided it isn't something that will harden to a concrete-like consistency, gasket in a tube might work. Stuff that gets really hard might get pressed into the splines and make it very difficult to remove the drum if/when it needs to come off.

The gasket predates my H, so I used silicone sealer. It worked fine. To remove the drum I had to remove the washer first and then the drum slid off pretty easily.

Silicone is strong in tension, but does not have much strength in shear.
