tore into the super h this morning

Looks like head work in store 2 bent valves and then push rods. There maybe more damage. We'll see when I have more time to tear the head off.

Might want to put the valve cover back on and wash the snot out of it before you get any further. It will make working on it a lot nicer.

Was the motor stuck?

I didn't think it was stuck but I did use my 12 volt jump pack
on the 6 volt system when I went to start it after 2
years. I should have stuck it in gear & rolled it to make sure.

Sticking or stuck valves will cause the pushrods to bend, but I've never seen a bent valve in a Farmall engine. Even with a valve fully open, and the piston at the top, I still don't think the piston would make contact with the valve.

Good way to have a 6 volt battery to explode. I briefly owned an H in 1990 that was a disaster. I tried starting it with a 6 volt charger that had a booster. Top of the battery blew off. Thank goodness it was tucked under the gas tank and not pulled out.

i've heard it said that push rods are 'fuses' for engines.. :)

good luck on the repair.

i have a ford 4000 4 cyl gasser that made spaghetti out of most of it's intake rods beginning of the year.. bent so bad I had to bolt cut them to get them out of the head / block!!

good luck!

She has never had anything done to it since the 70's when my dad and uncle replaced the case inbetween the engine and tranny so I guess she's due for a little money thrown at her. I'll wait until late fall after harvest to re do it. Probably completely restore her. This was the first tractor I ever ran so she's kinda special to me. I've been wanting to do this for years.

You can safely use a 12 volt jump on a regular H that has the starter switch remotely mounted on the light bar but do it directly at the starter and DO NOT push the starter button. Use the jumper cables as your switch by connecting directly to starter with one cable and last cable to frame of tractor to energize starter. This will in no way apply voltage to the six volt system on the tractor. NOW, on the super H with starter switch on the starter, if you hook 12 volts to that you are impressing that voltage onto the six volt battery. Some guys do this but it is definently not good and I would never do it that way.

That sounds like a good plan. I started driving Grandpa's 1941 H at age 10. If I recall it was idle in first gear the first couple of times. I am still trying to buy that one!!!!!

Good tip Pete. Never thought of that. My Hs and Ms are already 12 volt positive ground. Going to switch it to negative ground then install alternators and probably halogen or LED headlights.
