1086 'jumping'

Driller

Have a 1086 that when clutch is depressed, there is a little delay and then a lurch forward with a "clunk" sound. Any ideas as to what the problem may be?

That is your TA, its on its way out. The clunking is the "sprag clutch" or one way clutch freewheeling and the coming to an abrupt stop. Nothing you can do except drive it untill either high or low go out or pull it appart and put an new TA in now.

I never used the TA on my 1086 and it started doing that, in about 200 hours the clunk sounded like a steel bowling ball being dropped on a large piece of steel accompanied by the sensation of being rear-ended by a small car. Your TA is going away IMHO.

Thanks, I was hoping for better news:).We"ve had the tractor over 20 years and never used the TA either; guess you don"t have to use it for it to wear out.

Make sure your dump valve is adjusted properly, so the red light goes out just before or just as the tractor starts moving when you are engaging the clutch. Those clunks can be misleading. IH followed some tractors that were doing that way back in the 806. No conclusions were ever released that I ever heard. Most did not seem to mean TA was bad.

No, you don't, and you were foolish to not use it.

In fact it probably would've lasted longer had you run in TA about 50% of the time. That would have spread the load out across the two sides of the TA.

We never used them, foolish or not, and this was the only one that really acted up. I went with the TA eliminator last time around, do not expect to have trouble with it again.

Appreciate the input; I have a manual but have never explored adjusting the dump valve, etc. Will try to do that at first opportunity. And, I have a few more questions:

1. As the TA continues to deteriorate, will it reach the point where the tractor just won"t move? In other words, does the TA have to be functional for the tractor to run in direct drive?

2. Is there any way to slow down the "wearing out process?

3. Would actually using the TA (hasn"t been used in last 20 years)do any good or harm?
