Farmall 460 rear end

I have a Farmall 460 serial # 4622 SY. According to Tractor Data.com, it is a 1958 model. How can I tell if it has been reworked by the dealer or factory after the recall on the rearend trouble? Thanks in advance for your replies!

It is supposed to be marked with a triangle shape stamped after serial number. Surest way though would be to pull a brake shaft out, check bearing numbers on shaft and look in at the differential carrier bearings. Original were ball bearings on diff and change over was to tapered roller bearings. Brake shaft was still ball bearings but larger and then in a later bearing up date they were changed to a flat bower roller bearing. That was not mandatory as customer assumed reduced price for the bearing pkgs. You could also check part numbers on the differential support housings and inner brake plate.

I have one with no serial tag. It has 1 axle with 2 keyways. and different axle housing shape on the bottom has this been changed. Or left over 350 parts at factory. As far as i can tell everything else is original. also axles are 2 1/2 inch.

The number cast on one axle housing is 10*1*D and the other is 10*24*D. Both axles are 2.5 inches and only have one keyway. I do not see a triangle stamped by the tractor serial number. I plan on putting in a bigger engine. If this upgrade has not been done, will the rear end holdup to tractor pulling?

The serial tag wasn't always stamped, but the odds of finding a tractor with the original bearings at this stage of the game is pretty slim.

It won't take long to verify by looking.

The upgrade won't make a whole lot of difference for the short haul as it was for durability and not actual added strength. I've seen more than one 460 break an axle housing plowing so hard telling what it would do in a pull. All depends on your weight class and speed of the pull. We never sold any 460's with the small axle. If you are going to replace an engine I sure would pull a brake and look to see what you have inside. Might find a few other surprises as well.
