My farmall super a does not start charting until it has been running a while? not sure if it would be the generator or the regulator? it is all original equipment on the tractor. my geuss is it would be the generator? Anyone else ever have this problem??

Though this seems crude, start it cold, then (using a plastic Hammer)tap the brush end of the Generator. If it immediately starts charging, I believe a rebuild with new brushes is in order.
If no change, tap the regulator in the same way, Not hard, but kinda like you were starting a meeting with a gavel when everyone was already quiet. Again if it starts immediately. It is the regulator. If it were mine, I would take off the lid, and burnish the contacts with 320 grit paper, then clean the grit and shavings with electrical cleaner. then wipe the contacts with a folded dollar bill. Dirty field control points in the regulator can cause the problem you are having. Cleaning them as Jim suggested will probably correct your problem.

Dirty contact points will cause a higher resistance between them. When the generator is first started up the voltage in the field windings will be very low, possibly less than one volt. You need good contacts to ensure that this low voltage is grounded. With a good ground the field coils will use the small amount of current generated to become electromagnets to add to the residual magnetism in the pole shoes. When that happens the voltage will quickly spike upwards until it is great enough for the regulator to start to control the maximum voltage.

The simple test is to ground the filed terminal on the generator once the engine is started. If that causes the generator to immediately start to work you know the problem will be dirty or loose contacts.
