1066 steering pump behind the steering wheel

My brother took the power steering "hand pump" as described by the IHC shop manual apart on the 1066 due to bad leakage when cold. He replaced some o-rings and may have gotten IHC parts as well--- he didn't say. He reassembled it and now upon startup the steering wheel turns all the way to the left on its own and keeps trying to go farther. Any help would be appreciated. TractorVet--- Have you ever run into this?

Well he screwed up and got it messed up in side . MOST hand pump leaks are due to the top seal leaking and disassembly of the hand pump is not required along with the removal from the tractor. This falls under the HEADING OF DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME . This job is best left to the professionals , or atleast ASK before ya jump. More then likely he will end up having to get a new hand pump .

For what it's worth, the hand pump for a tilt-wheel model is no longer available from IHC, but you can still get the non-tilt pump. I had to find a good used one for my 966.

When you tear down a hand pump, you need to mark the parts, so that they go back together in the same position, if you don't you got big trouble. I mark them with a center punch before I take them apart. You could check to see if the paint matches up.

It is unfortunate that he took it all apart as that is not necessary to totally disassemble to repair leaks on those units. I found out many years ago that they are a touchy unit to totally take apart. But, I am not sure what he did wrong. At any rate he will have to take it apart again and hopefully hasn't damaged that spool. First off, go feel of another tractor with same unit and get the feel of the spool shifting without the engine running.
