340 no Hydraulics

After sitting a while (not running), my “340” utility tractor was losing hydraulics. By moving leavers (back & forth) and after a few minutes it would come back. Thinking my pump was bad, purchased another used pump from (from a reputable dealer) also replaces the hydraulic filter, gasket and O-rings at the pump. Thinking I might have an air leak, I even replaced the short hose on the inlet line. Now I can’t get the hydraulics to work at all. I even put the old pump back on, with no luck. Any thought on what my problem is? Your help much appreciated.

Gear pumps are notorious for poor self priming... you need to get oil all the way to the pump in most cases for them to prime. That doesn't explain why you lost prime in the first place, but a bad "O-ring" or a leak in the suction (inlet) line to the pump would be a good guess. Parking it on a steep hill with the front down hill might help... anything to get the reservoir higher than the pump could help to locate the problem.

I have the same problem on my 340 farmall and this is what I do to cure it, I crack the pressure line that goes up to the hydraulic controls. On my tractor it's a hose to steel connection on the brake side of the tractor. I don't know if your utility model is the same. I set the trottle a little higher than idle and it might take a minute or two but it always works. Good luck with your tractor.
