460 Utility!

I just picked up a 460 utility with a loader on it from the auction, I hope I got a good deal, the loader works but doesn't seem to have a lot of power and it kind of falls a bit before it raises, sound like anything? Where do I check for fluid and are there any filters I should change? The poor girl is severely neglected but runs pretty good and drives well, the power steering even works. I am going to change the oil, plugs, and clean the sediment bowl first, but I don't know anything about fluid and filters yet hopefully that is what it needs. Also there is a plate over the PTO, can I get one off a donor tractor and just plug it in? It looks and runs rough but something made me buy it any info I can learn about what to change or clean or check would help me out a lot Thanks guys,
Eric

The FIRST thing to do is buy a set of book! This site, and BinderBooks are good scources. No you cant"just plug in" a pto.The tractor is probably missing all the pto parts from the flywheel on back...The loader dropping part is the valve is worn out

Just had to replace the pump on my 460 this spring (not cheap) but cheaper than buying a new loader tractor. The only way to know if it's a bad pump is to do a pressure/volume check. On my tractor there is a plug on the right side under the brake area to check fluid level and a plate by the gear shift lever with 3 bolts to fill it but mine is a row crop not a utility. Best bet is to order the manual.

Remember this is an old farm tractor and hydraulic systems have come a long way. Modern tractors run 3000+ PSI and high-volume two stage pumps (25-35 GPM). The 460 is running around 1800PSI and IIRC the pump is around 15GPM. It's going to be slower.

Changing the oil and filter is a good idea. It is probably long past overdue, and if left long enough, could eventually ruin the pump. Odds are it won't fix the problem, assuming there is a problem.

Pressure and flow checks will require special tools, which you might be able to borrow from a local equipment dealer.
