IH 454 pto popping out

outdoors

Member
Was running a flail mower today for a few hours and several times the pto lever moved from the fully engaged position to part way back allowing the pto to slip. Is this a sign of wear to the pto, clutch, or simply in need of a retaining spring, etc? After that I just rested my hand on the lever to ensure that it stayed fully engaged.

Thanks

Hi, most problems with PTO lever is the control
cable or the PTO control valve on top of the MCV
under the left foot rest. The control cable runs
from the PTO lever under the seat to the PTO
control valve on top of MCV valve. Usually the
control cable becomes rusty and sticks or dirt
gets under the rubber boot covering the PTO valve.
So take your favorite penetrating oil and lube the
control cable while working the PTO lever back and
forth, also lift the protective rubber boot over
the PTO control valve and spray some oil inside
the boot.
