Is it ecessary to shut off fuel on diesel tank?

I have a farmall MD. When the valve under the fuel tank is closed, it had an occasional drip. When I leave it open, it does not drip. Is it necessary to shut off the diesel on a diesel tractor? I know a gas tractor can flood a carburetor and cause issues.

It won't cause a problem if your fuel system is in order. Some have been known to fill up the crankcase if there is a problem in one of the pumps...the lift pump IIRC.

You should cut off the gas and let the MD run until it dies, then throw the lever to diesel to seat the valves. No diesel is going to get into the firing chambers unless the injector pump is running, so if that's what you have to do to stop it leaking, I would do it.
I used teflon valve stem packing to keep mine from leaking at the valve.

I believe the tank shutoff is provided simply to prevent fuel loss while changing the primary fuel filter.

As long as the fuel system is in good shape (ie. no leaks) there's no reason to close the shutoff when the tractor is shut down.

May want to check the injector pump sump oil for diesel contamination to decide. If its like a lot of the old ones with less than a perfect system. They will get the pump sump oil contaminated with diesel faster not running with the fuel turned on than when running.

Turning off the fuel on a diesel can ruin several hours of your day if you make a mistake and forget to turn it back on before starting.

If it's not leaking, leave it on. There's no way for an MD to accidentally start on diesel.

The only time we ever shut off the fuel on a diesel is to change the fuel filters.
