w-9 grounding

Positive ground from the factory. However which polarity it is grounded today 70 years later is anybody's guess.

If in doubt, connect the battery with the positive post grounded. Now polarize the generator: With the battery connected momentarily jumper the BAT and GEN terminals at the regulator (or cutout if equipped). You should then be good to go!

Positive ground from the factory. Put it together the way the cables are organized (terminal size) or if it is negative ground and you want it to be as delivered new, reverse the leads (and terminals so they fit), then before starting, jump between Bat and Gen on the regulator to polarize the generator. Jump with a solid copper wire, and expect it to spark a little. Hold no more than one second. Jim

The cutout doesent care which ground is used but check your regulator as it will usually say on the bottom which ground must be used.

The tractor probably has a cutout, but like Bob M says anything can happen in 70 years. IIRC they didn't start using regulators until 1948.

One other thing... If it has/had a battery in it, whichever post is connected to the tractor's chassis/frame is the ground.

You'd be amazed at how many people ask the "which ground?" question, when there's a battery already in the tractor...
