C60 Head Bolts

Hello all and thanks in advance for the help... I have a 184 LowBoy that I'm working on replacing the head on. First problem I encountered was that 5 of the bolts sheered off and are stuck in the block. Any ideas or tricks on getting them out? I sprayed them with PB Blaster and I was thinking on trying easy outs?...Also, does anyone know where I can get a new set of head bolts? Or could I just use bolts from the hardware store? I figure they're special bolts like on car heads but I'm not sure. Thanks again, Daniel

If the bolt sheared off in the block, an e-z out will likely break off in the block also!
Carefully center drill the broken bolt , enlarging the hole gradually until you can see threads. Use a sharp pointed tool to pick out the old threads and/or use a thread tap to carefully clean out the residue. Vacuum or blow the hole clean. Use anti-sieze on the replacement bolt!!

If there is anything sticking up above the deck, rap the broken bolt with a hammer several times. Take vise grips and as tight as you can, grab the bolt and work back and forth to free it up.
If this doesn't work, you may have to weld a nut to the exposed bolt and then use a wrench to work it back and forth to get it out.
If that doesn't work, or you continually break it off more and more, you'll have to drill them out as carefully as possible. If the thread are damaged during this process, you can helicoil them.
Definately use thread sealer or antiseize upon reinstallation and adjust torque appropriately. All the bolts penetrate the water jacket except for two that enter the intake ports.

If you're drilling on them get some left handed drill bits (backwards) that way as you are drilling you won't be tightening what's left of the bolt, might even be backing it out some. Sometimes by the time you get the center of the bolt hogged out it'll be loose.

One thing I've never mastered is drilling centered and straight. The bit always wanders off to one side and you usually end up mucking up the hole.

Forget the easy-out. they only work if it comes out easy. If they twisted off you will break the easy-out & have more problems. If you aren't up to drilling them with left hand drill bits, take it to a machine shop & have them milled out.
