Got an acquaintence who has a chance of getting a Super W-6. Hes wanting to know the differences he can look for so as to know if its a real Super 6 or just a standard W-6

Best determinant is the serial number. First 3 characters for a Super W6 s/n will be SW6; for a W6 it will be WBK.

Another spotting feature: A Super W6 engine will have the characters "C264" cast prominently on the upper right rear of the block above the oil filter canister. A W6 block will be blank here.

Handy if you know the difference between disk and band brakes. They don't jump out at you, shake your hand and say, "Hi I am Disk Brakes!"

Go for the right brake assembly, because the left one can sometimes be replaced with an M&W "Live Pow'r" clutch, which will throw you off.

If the brake cover looks like a smooth sheet metal pot/pan with a lever sticking out the side near the top, it has band brakes.

If the brake cover looks like a heavy cast piece with a button (or hole) in the middle, it has disk brakes.

Also, a Super W-6 can have either the cast iron tub chassis (early), or frame rails like a Farmall M (late). IH switched in the middle of production.
