alternator problems

I have a Farmall M that has been converted to 12 volt. If I leave the battery hooked up overnight it will be dead the next morning. The alternator is showing charge when the tractor is running.Does anybody have any suggestions to what the problem might be. Also where could I find a wiring diagram to make sure it is wired correctly?

Would help to know what alternator you have. If it is a Delco 10SI it could be as simple as havbing the #1 wire on the little 2 wire plug hooked up so it has power all the time and if that is so yep that will drain the battery and also shorten the life of the alternator

O that 2 wire plug there is a #1 and #2 wire. The #2 wire goes to the big post that in turn goes to the battery and the #1 goes to the hot with ignition on side of the switch with a resister or light bulb or diode in line. I have done so many of them over the years I can pretty much do them in my sleep

if it is a one wire alternator, with only the big wire connected to the amp gauge, it has either a faulty regulator, or a bad diode in the bridge array. If you have an amp meter that reads amps and milliamps, remove the big wire at the altarnator and connect your hand held amp meter set to the amps range. (probably need to move the lead wires to a different red lead hole to do it. (do not start the tractor) if it reads amps that is going to require a rebuilt alt. (unless you are electrically operative)
I recommend a 3 wire system as shown in the diagrams provided below. Jim

Take a peek at this...

Thats or the 3 wire.

one wire shouldn't have an issue like you describe. If it's a one wire I'd start lokking at the switches and wiring harness.

Install a master switch where the negative battery cable is grounded. That will isolate your battery from being grounded when the switch
is in the off position. Military vehicles have had this for years starting for me in 1951. No one can start your tractor when it has a master switch as there's no voltage to the ignition or to the starter. Hal
